The Chevrolet Corvette driven by former Alabama standout Henry Ruggs III was traveling 127 mph when it hit a Toyota Rav4 at 3:39 a.m. Tuesday, according to the arrest report prepared by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
The driver of the Toyota Rav4 died in the fiery wreck that resulted from the collision in Las Vegas. The victim has been identified as a 23-year-old Las Vegas woman.
Judge Joe Bonaventure set Ruggs’ bail at $150,000 on Wednesday morning after the former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver was arrested for his role in the fatal accident. The District Attorney’s Office had requested Ruggs’ bail be set at $1 million.
After Ruggs’ court appearance, Steve Wolfson, the Clark County district attorney, said his office was considering charging Ruggs with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in death or substantial bodily injury as well as reckless driving resulting in death or substantial bodily injury
In Nevada, a DUI-resulting-in-death conviction is punishable by two to 20 years in state prison, and probation is not a sentencing option.
“This is a tragic and sad day,” Wolfson said. “It’s a tragedy because a woman lost her life and a lot of other people are suffering. It’s also sad and tragic that Mr. Ruggs is potentially losing an entire career and facing a stiff prison sentence. That’s the message. The message is use an alternative, make a good choice, don’t drive while impaired.”
